St. Mary's Cathedral, Pattom

St. Mary’s Cathedral at Pattom is the Cathedral Church of the Syro Malankara Major Archiepiscopal Church, Trivandrum. The foundation of the Cathedral was laid by Archbishop Mar Ivanios in 1950. The crypt for the burial of Metropolitans was constructed first and it took nearly 15 years to complete the church. The Cathedral has witnessed several important events. His Grace Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios was consecrated on January 29, 1953 in it. Archbishop Mar Ivanios died on July 15, 1953 and he now awaits the resurrection in the Tom of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral was designed by Mr. Robert Fernando and the construction was supervised by Rev. Fr. Seraphion OIC. The Fresco paintings inside the Cathedral were done by Miss Marie Berange, a French Artist and are modern, symbolic and are oriental in their concept and design.

The Cathedral was consecrated by his Grace Benedict Mar Gregorios on February 22, 1965 and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope John Paul II blessed the Cathedral with his historic visit on February 8, 1986 and many other dignitaries visited the church. In 2005, Cathedral celebrated its Golden Jubilee.

Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios died on October 10, 1994 and laid rest for resurrection in the Tomb of the Cathedral. Moran Mor Cyril Baselios Catholicos Died on January 18, 2007 and laid rest for resurrection in the Tom of the Cathedral
